Anne Frank’S Diary Reveals How Even In The Face Of Adversity, She Was Able To Maintain Hope For A Better Future
Anne Frank’s diary entries start out as those of any typical 13-year-old schoolgirl, writing about her classes, her friends, and special occasions.
But soon enough, Anne is forced to grapple with the reality of anti-Jewish laws and the difficult decisions that come with them.
Within a few weeks of Anne’s 13th birthday, Hitler’s oppressive anti-Jewish laws brought major changes to her family’s life.
Her father received a call-up notice from the SS for his daughter Margot – a clear sign that she would be taken away if they didn’t go into hiding.
And so Anne used her entire journal to document the rapid sequence of events that led their small family into its hidden safehouse on Prinsengracht 263.
From then on, Anne was no longer just a young girl living in a bustling city like Amsterdam – she became an inmate in her own home, where every passing second could bring consequences if someone discovered them.
Although surrounded by friends and relatives who helped provide for the family while they were in hiding, Anne never got used to her new lifestyle.
She wrote about how the restrictions weighed heavily upon her and how much she yearned for freedom again one day in her journal: “Paper has more patience than people.”
Living In Fear And Isolation: The Daily Reality Of Life In The Secret Annex
The Secret Annex was the place where Anne Frank and her family hid during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.
This hidden corner of an office building in Amsterdam provided not only safety, but also a unique living experience that Anne documented in her famous diary.
Anne’s family shared the Secret Annex with the van Daans, who were acquaintances of Otto Frank, Anne’s father.
There was also Hermine and Elizabeth, two secretaries at Opekta (the business run by Otto), who knew about the occupants of the annex and regularly brought in food and other essentials.
The main Secret Annex entrance was concealed behind a door covered by a bookcase – cleverly built on to a wall so it could not be detected from outside.
Beyond this door there were steep stairs leading down to two individual rooms for Mr & Mrs Frank and next door for Anne and her sister Margot.
Adjacent to these lower floor bedrooms was an additional small room containing only a sink plus another lavatory.
At the top of these stairs was a large open-plan space used as kitchen, living room and study by both families plus an additional bedroom for Mr & Mrs van Daan and even further up – a loft attic which held extra supplies for all those inside the Secret Annex walls.
Though conditions weren’t simple or ideal due to strict rules enforced by their need for secrecy such as blackout curtains over windows meaning no one could ever look outside or any noise from radio or coughing must be kept low .
Despite this everyone felt grateful for their safety reassured via supplies brought into their living space each week from their loyal secret keepers – Miep & Bep .
The Irony Of Mrs. Van Daan’s Argument Showed How Even In A Time Of Stress, Humor Could Reign Supreme
The annex in which the Franks and van Daans spent the duration of their time in isolation was small, meaning the families had to be mindful of the space they all shared.
However, having different opinions on many topics began to cause tension amongst them.
Anne’s entry from July 12th noted that there seemed to be a growing distance between her and her mother and sister.
She also felt misunderstood by them – any time she tried to offer an opinion or help with something practical like fixing her mother’s illegible handwriting, Anne would get criticized for it.
Others however were exonerated for seemingly more significant crimes, such as when Margot broke the vacuum cleaner without reprimand.
Mrs.
van Daan’s arrival was met with amusement when she informed everyone that she had brought along a chamberpot!
This set the tone for their dynamic as Mrs.
van Dan clashed repeatedly with Mrs.
Frank; she disliked modern parenting methods and disagreed with Mr.
Frank’s view that young people should be modestly ambitious – this only led her to becoming more vocal about her own personal values regarding modesty and propriety in young women!
All these contrasting beliefs often caused great friction between all parties involved but ultimately resulted in many hilariously heated arguments – such as when Mrs.
van Daan contradicted herself while trying to defend her point-of-view, leaving everybody else speechless until finally bursting into laughter at how ridiculous it all was!
The Perils Of Living In The Annex: Illness, Hunger, And Unwanted Visitors
The Franks and van Daans lived in constant fear of illness, with no easy access to a doctor.
On one such occasion, Anne’s father came down with what appeared to be measles, and all they could do was hope that her mother’s remedy of helping him sweat it out would work.
And while they had access to some medicines like aspirin, codeine, and valerian drops, these precious commodities were few and far between.
Food was also a great concern for the families.
As time went on, coming up with something new for breakfast, lunch, and dinner became increasingly difficult.
Potatoes often prevailed in one form or another as a feature for each meal – though sometimes miserable tasting ones!
At one point there was an abundance of lettuce so that’s all they ate; boiled lettuce, raw lettuce, lettuce served with rotten potatoes.
They obtained most of their food from the black market using ration coupons which cost different amounts depending on what food item they needed.
Birthdays and holidays were once-in-a-while exceptions when they could indulge in something sweet or even get a present of a bottle of beer for the adults.
But getting this food came at its own risks too; such as noise when 50 pounds of beans dropped down the stairs – alerting the whole house to believe the building was falling apart!
Fortunately nothing else came from it other than extra beans around the house which they picked up days later.
Luckily by mid-November Mr Frank was feeling better again as well!
Life In The Secret Annex: Anticipation, Fear And Disapproval
When the Secret Annex had room for one more, Albert Dussel was selected to take up residence.
He arrived on November 17th, and was greeted warmly by the others.
Mr.
Dussel shared news of many people who had been taken away by the SS and Anne wrote about the terrible scenes she’d seen from her window.
At first, Mr.
Dussel seemed pleasant enough, but it wasn’t long before his true nature was revealed: he was an uncompromising disciplinarian and lecturer.
Mrs.
Frank received regular reports of Anne’s “bad behavior” from him, leading Anne to call him “His Excellency” as a result.
Between Mr.
Dussel’s lectures and Mrs.
Frank constantly admonishing her daughter for anything she deemed wrong, Anne often found herself in a desperate state trying to figure out which emotions should be expressed at any given time – sometimes laughing, other times crying – unable to escape feeling guilty no matter what she did.
Anne Frank Uses Her Talent To Face Fear And Adversity During The War
One of the fears that constantly hung over the annex residents was that of making too much noise and having one of the warehouse workers hear something and become curious.
It was a source of constant worry for them, especially at night when noses were most sensitive to unusual sounds.
On March 25th, 1943, their fears came true – there was a noise coming from downstairs in the warehouse.
Mr.
van Daan had a horrible cough which threatened to give away their presence at any moment, so Peter and Mr.
Frank went down to investigate while everyone else tried desperately to keep quiet!
Fortunately, they eventually heard the sound of feet running back up the stairs and, suspecting it was burglars who’d been scared off by their presence, quickly returned themselves.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be the last time this happened as burglars increasingly targeted Amsterdam as the war dragged on.
On May 2nd 1943 Anne wrote about how every day brought with it heightened tension – a combination of worry over possible burglars and uncertainty about what would happen with the city bombing going on outside.
The hot summer made matters worse as they couldn’t risk putting out any rubbish from where they were hiding in case it might give away their secret location.
Anne persevered by trying her luck at writing stories – with “Eva’s Dream” being her favorite – in an attempt to distract herself from all of these worries.
Despite being unsure she could make a living out writing, she knew that expressing herself through words was her God-given talent and something she must pursue if only in her spare time as she wouldn’t want have a life like her mother or Mrs van Daan “going about work and are forgotten”.
Anne Experiences Maturity, A First Kiss And Crawling Days In The Secret Annex
When Anne and Peter were holed up in the Secret Annex, their relationship slowly but steadily grew.
Despite living under incredibly trying circumstances, something special blossomed between them.
Although at first Peter seemed like a lazy bore, Anne gradually saw him for the complex person he really was.
She started to show patience and understanding towards Mrs.
van Daan and her parents, realizing that her own attitude may have been part of the problem in her difficult relationship with her mother.
Beyond that, Anne also realized her own sexual maturity during this time.
She longed for Peter to look past their age difference and see the real person underneath.
When they looked into each other’s eyes at night, with just the gentle light from the moon shinning through the annex windows, they formed an unspoken bond that only they shared with each other.
As weeks passed by Anne became more comfortable around Peter despite having previously thought he had seen her as an over-eager chatterbox; finally she experienced her first kiss on April 16th 1944 which made it truly feel as though things had changed between them – this was a ‘red letter’ day for both of them!
Despite now having such a strong connection however, it still took some courage to explain their affection to their respective parents who were in hiding with them..
Young love had grown within these walls and neither Anne or peter could deny its power now!
Anne Frank’S Journey Of Self-Betterment Through Adversity
Anne Frank’s story reveals that, even in the midst of such difficult times, she was still a teenage girl with dreams and ambitions.
At the same time, she also noticed certain weaknesses within herself that she sought to change and work on.
In her diary entries, we can see two sides of Anne.
On one hand, there’s the lighthearted side: the flippant and cheerful side that most people saw around her.
On the other hand is a deeper, better version of Anne; one more thoughtful and introspective who emerged when put on the spot.
This part of Anne knew what she wanted out of life, but felt held back by her own insecurities.
Anne knew it was this side of herself that would bring out the best in her if only given a chance – so despite trying times, she remained determined to make it happen.
She had plans for self-betterment which included learning new things like French and English as well as studying historical figures like Charles V and Galileo; all these choices reflecting an ambition unique to Anne.
This duality between ambition and uncertainty is explored throughout her diary entries amidst struggles both internal and external against Nazi occupants in hiding.
Both sides of Anne ultimately complete each other in creating our heroine as we know her – proving us with a timeless story that speaks to our present day society even still today.
