The broadcast from Caracas, Venezuela, showcases Dudamel leading the two organizations that have been so prominent in his life, the LA Phil and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela, in a dynamic performance of Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, “Symphony of a Thousand.”
The broadcast, recorded on February 18, is hosted by award-winning actor John Lithgow, and features soloists: Manuela Uhl, soprano 1; Julianna Di Giacomo, soprano 2; Kiera Duffy, soprano 3; Anna Larsson, alto 1; Charlotte Hellekant, alto 2; Burkhard Fritz, tenor; Brian Mulligan, baritone; Alexander Vinogradov, bass; and the National Youth Choir of Venezuela, featuring 1,200 children, totaling more than 1,400 musicians on stage. This exceptional presentation is the climactic performance of The Mahler Project – one of the pillars of the LA Phil’s season – which featured Mahler’s complete symphonic cycle presented in both Los Angeles and Caracas.
